ANNE S PIERCE


The training vessel ANNE S PIERCE shwon in this photo departing St. John's July 30, 2010 for training exercises.
Built in 1982 as a scallop dragger, she is now used as a training vessel for the Marine Institute. The vessel was contracted by the Transporation Safety Board to conduct trawls in the debris field of Swiss Air Flight 111.

Two days before I took this photo the vessel rescued 5 people about a mile off St. John's, Newfoundland after their pleasure craft capsized.

USS PORTER

The PORTER is named after Commodore David Porter and his son Admiral David Dixon Porter, according to wikpedia. The ship is 505 feet long, and a HP of 100,000.

SIR ROBERT BOND arrives Lewisporte


The Labrador ferry SIR ROBERT BOND as shown in this photo arriving Lewisporte, Newfoundland July 15, 2010 on its weekly run to Lewisporte from Cartwright and Goose Bay has been the work horse of this service for many years carrying freight and passengers to and from Labrador. A trip I many a few times with my father back in the 80's, a trip that takes 36 hours, but now its takes approx 41 hours with the stop. I made 4 trips to Labrador on the Bond with as I said my father, he was Chief Engineer then and he still sails on her today as Chief Engineer.
I go back along ways with the Bond, when operated by Marine Atlantic she use to visit Lewisporte twice a week, and I would go aboard to see my father, I watched and photographed her just about my entire life arriving Lewisporte and St. John's, and the last 20 years or so my father in law has been Captain on her, so I guess I do have quite a history with this Ship.

She was built in 1986 at Port Weller, Ontario operates on the ferry service carrying freight and passengers from Cartwright, Labrador to Nain, Labrador

The ship just being delivered to Maersk in Jan 2010 is 90 meter's long, 23,500 HP and a bollard pull of 255 tons.

CPO ITALY and TUVAQ


Lightering operation in St. John's around Nov 2009. The TUVAQ was alongside the British tanker CPO ITALY taking fuel from her and keeping it on the TUVAQ. Thats cargo was kept onboard the TUVAQ and brought to Lewisporte, Newfoundland for storage.

Lack of ice sends icebreakers back to port

A mild winter has sent two of Canada's largest icebreakers back to port. The TERRY FOX arrived in St. John's Feb 27, 2010, and the LOUIS S ST. LAURENT was due to arrive back in Argentia today.

The vessel bulit in 1982 in Marystown, Newfoundland is used primary for fisheries patrol on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, she is also used for earch and rescure operations off the East Coast of Newfoundland and on the Grand Banks.

LOUIS S ST. LAURENT



The LOUIS S ST. LAURENT has arrived in St. John's for fuel and stores before heading to the gulf area

APOLLO has finished operations for season

The Straits ferry APOLLO has finished operation on the ferry run between St. Barbe, Newfoundland and Blanc Sablon, Quebec and will now head to St.John's for a refit. The SIR ROBERT BOND will depart Lewisporte Feb 1, 2010 and head to Blanc Sablon to pick up the run Feb 3, 2010, departing Blanc Sablon 0700hrs for Corner Brook, Newfoundland.
The APOLLO will be back on the service between St. Barb and Blanc Sablon April 1, and the the BOND will head for refit before picking up its normal run between Lewisporte, Cartwright and Goose Bay.

Tugs in lay-up


St. John's this winter is hosting three tugs owned by Northern Transporation LTD. The MICHAEL AMOS, built in 1984 was just bought in 2009 after the vessel towed a barge from Indonesia.
The ALEX GORDON and JIM KILABUK are frequent visitors to St. John's were both built in 1975. The Alex Gordon and Jim Kilabuk made a trip to the South Coast area of Newfoundland in Dec 2009, returned to St. John's and tied up

The new MAERSK NOMAD shown in this photo secured in St. John's Jan 10, 2010. The Nomad built in 2009 arrived in St. John's Nov 2009 and is currently providing support for the drillship Stena Carron off the South Coast of Newfoundland.

CCGS HENRY LARSEN


The icebreaker HENRY LARSEN as shown secured in St. John's, Newfoundland Jan 10, 2010, built in 1987 in Vancouver, BC, she is 328 feet long and 64 feet wide. She is named after Henry Larsen, commander of the RCMP patrol vessel St. Roch, which was the first vessel to traverse the Northwest Passage in a single season.

She spends the winter around Newfoundland escorting various types of ships and in the summer she heads to the Arctic to escort ships supplying the Arctic communities and also perform scientific work.

Year round ferry service for Labrador


The government of Newfoundland has announced a pilot project for this year to provide a year round ferry service across the Strait of Belle Isle.
The service is provided by the APOLLO and this will continue until Jan 31, 2010, depending on ice conditions. The APOLLO built in 1970 has operated on the St. Barbe run since aquired by the Woodward Group.
During the refit of the APOLLO, the ferry service will be provided by the SIR ROBERT BOND, but the BOND will operate twice a week from Corner Brook taking 12 hours one way, where as crossing from St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon took 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The Newfoundland Government is investing an extra $1.5 million. Photos shows the APOLLO, earlier posts shows the BOND

Atlantic Vision docks

The ATLANTIC VISION was able to dock this afternoon and unload, she is scheduled to depart tonight weather permitting from North Sydney. The CARIBOU remains holding outside Port aux Basques due to high winds.

Gulf Ferry Delayed

Due to high winds in the Gulf, Marine Atlantic ferries the CARIBOU and ATLANTIC VISION are delayed.
The CARIBOU is holding outside Port aux Basques unable to dock due to high winds, the vessel departed North Sydney, Nova Scotia at 1200hrs Jan 2. The ATLANTIC VISION is at the dock in North Sydney, it arrived there at 1700hrs Jan 2, but is unable to offload due to high winds.

TERRY FOX departs, GRENFELL arrives

The icebreaker TERRY FOX has departed St. John's today Jan 2, 2010 enroute to Sydney, Nova Scotia. Arriving in port today was the SIR WILFRED GRENFELL from Lewisporte located on the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland.
